WHS Service Learning Students volunteer at Highland County Dog Pound, Humane Society

The Whiteoak Service Learning Class recently visited the Highland County Animal Shelter and the dog pound.

Both organizations partnered up with the Service Learning class for Paws Day, and event held earlier in the year. To continue this partnership, Service Learning offered to volunteer for a day.

At the Humane Society, students were able to play with the dogs and also help to clean and organize a storage shed.

Students who volunteered at the Highland County Dog Pound cleaned the pins, walked and played with the dogs, and fed and watered them at the end of the day.

Whiteoak students work to
spruce up community park

Whiteoak High School Service Learning Class recently had their fourth and final capstone project for the year.

Seniors Marissa Bohl, Ally Avedisian, and Nathan Hauke did their research and found that the community park, Diehl Park, in Mowrystown needed a little facelift and decided to tackle this project by getting the school, community, and business partners together to make this possible.

With over 80 Whiteoak High School students, community partners such as Village of Mowrystown, Mowrystown Fire Department, and 4-H groups along with business partners Lowe's, Ervin Hill Sand & Gravel, Kibler of Mt. Orab, Chuck Wait Tires, Brad's Garden Center, Five Points Greenhouse, and Burn's Greenhouse, this project was completed on Friday, April 20.

Students, community members, and business partners helped paint playground equipment, did landscaping, cleaned up trails, repaired and painted picnic tables, repaired a sand volleyball court, and installed a tire swing.

The Service Learning class has accomplished three other capstone projects this year including: Community Thanksgiving Lunch, Animal Care Program at our elementary, and Anti-Bullying Week for Whiteoak Jr./Sr. High.

This energetic group of 12 students has participated in many more community projects such as PALS program with the elementary school, volunteering at Bright Local Food Pantry, and making homemade laundry detergent for the pantry on an ongoing basis.

The park cleanup continued on Saturday, April 21 with 4-H groups, Mowrystown Fire Department, and students completing the projects. The Mowrystown Fire Department hosted a cookout for the volunteers and community.
