The Wilmington College Department of Theatre is among the first colleges in Ohio to produce the Tony Award-winning musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."
The show is set to run Nov. 19, 20 and 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.
This H-I-T musical is fresh off the national tour and tells the story of over-achieving adolescents that are the finalists in their county's spelling bee. Music and lyrics are by William Finn and based upon the book by Rachel Sheinkin.
Conceived by Rebecca Feldman with additional material by Jay Reiss, this musical comedy will challenge the audience's spelling skills and have them humming songs all the way H-O-M-E.
Wynn Alexander is directing "Spelling Bee" with musical direction by Steven Haines. Timothy Larrick is assistant musical director and Lois Hock and Becky Haines are handling the set and lighting/sound design, respectively.
The cast features: Rona Lisa Perrett portrayed by Mandy McDonough, Justin Duvall as Chip Tolentino, Chelsey Gehring as Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere, Caeleb Reisinger as Leaf Coneybear, Robert Lowery as William Morris Barff'ee, Kristen Carpenter as Marcy Park, Susan Dicken as Olive Ostrovsky and Josh Gough as Douglas Panch.
Six kids face off in the battle of their lives at The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The battle is intensive. The words are outrageous. Let the spelling (and the singing) begin!
Three adults adjudicate the proceedings: a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a mildly insane vice principal and "The Official Comfort Counselor" completing his community service to the State of New York. Critics described it as both "tender and sardonic. This hilarious musical of overachievers' angst brings you inside the spelling championship to end them all."
This tuneful, offbeat and at times heartwarming show offers audience members the opportunity (strictly voluntary) to become part of the action as on-stage spellers. The New York Times calls Spelling Bee, "irresistible, riotously funny and remarkably ingenious - gold stars all around."
Audience members are urged to come early and register so they can be a part of the story and test their spelling skills L-I-V-E!
