The 39th graduating class of Southern State Community College’s practical nursing program was honored during a special ceremony held Aug. 27, at the Central Campus.
Thirteen students were recognized for completion of the one-year program.
“We started this journey one year ago, with one goal on our minds – to become nurses,” said graduate Tanya Mitchell who provided the opening comments. “As we progressed, our goal was to pass our tests. As graduation neared, our goal was to graduate. And tonight, our goal is to remain friends.”
Southern State’s Director of Nursing Dr. Julianne Krebs and President Dr. Sherry A. Stout offered the welcome, followed by introduction of the guest speaker, Jody Puckett, R.N., by Marilyn Jones, practical nursing faculty member.
Puckett, a 2002 SSCC graduate and current clinical coordinator at Clermont Mercy Hospital, remarked that times are changing since his experience as the only male nursing student in a class of 30-plus women. When his career as a registered nurse first began, Puckett often was mistaken for a doctor.
“You’re a male nurse?” his patients would ask, to which he would reply: “Well, I can’t be a female nurse!” Puckett reflected on the responsibilities that go hand-in-hand with the nursing profession.
“Patients will remember you,” he said. “They are real people who put their complete faith and trust in you.”
Following Puckett’s speech, Dr. Krebs recommended the graduates for certification.
The certificates were presented by Dr. Krebs, Dr. Stout and practical nursing faculty members Dora Davison, Jody Gray, Teresa Grooms, Marilyn Jones and Brenda Tilton.
Dr. Krebs recognized Phi Theta Kappa members Heather Ramsey and Delta Morrison, and announced that Ramsey graduated summa cum laude from the nursing program.
Jones then presented the Licensed Practical Nursing Association of Ohio’s free one-year membership award to graduate Hope Gunter.
Nursing graduate Jessica Mason offered the benediction to close the evening’s ceremony.[[In-content Ad]]
