Ten-year-old Sarah Rose Thatcher will be the featured guest for a Meet-the-Artist event 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) on Southern State Community College’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The daughter of Jim and Carissa Thatcher, Sarah is a fifth grader at North Adams Elementary School and has been interested in photography since she was 5 years old.

“I like taking pictures because it is my hobby,” said Sarah whose artwork portrays a variety of subjects including flowers, animals, family and friends. “It is fun and you can save back family memories.”

Sarah’s mother Carissa, who works as the manager of the South Campus LRC, said that her daughter’s selection as a featured artist was actually kind of a fluke.

“We were putting last minute touches on a 4-H project at South Campus and, after seeing Sarah’s work, David Allen and Amy Werring (LRC staff members) came up with this wonderful idea of featuring a ‘budding artist’ in their photography exhibit. They explained the whole vision that they had and Sarah was all for it. David especially has gone out of his way to make her feel like a star.”

Sarah’s photography is currently on exhibition in the LRC and will culminate with the Oct. 13 meet-the-artist event. Although she says she has enjoyed her stardom as an artist, her goals for the future include becoming a doctor.

“Sarah has a lot of creativity and a unique eye for colors, shapes and dimensions when it comes to taking pictures,” said Carissa. “I thank the stars for digital cameras because I would have to sell my soul to Kodak to keep her in film!”
