Keeping pace with the demands of the national labor market, Southern State Community College has added a private security certificate to its current curriculum.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of security guards is expected to grow by 18 percent through 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations.
The private security certificate will require the completion of 46 credit hours (27 technical, 19 non-technical) as follows: The successful completion of “LENF 104: private security” will earn the student separate certification from the state of Ohio. The course will be offered from 6-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and some Saturdays, from Sept. 28 through Dec. 4, at Central Campus in Hillsboro. Students must then complete the remainder of the courses as listed below for certification from Southern State.
If taken full time, the certificate is designed to be completed in three quarters. For the first quarter, students are encouraged to enroll in LENF 104: private security (12 credit hours) and SOCI 230: social problems (3). Second-quarter courses include CORR: 115: interviewing & interpersonal communication (3), ENGL 101: English composition I (4), PSYC 110: principles of psychology (5), and PSCI 104: Amercian government – American democracy (3). Third-quarter courses include ENGL 102: English composition II (4), LENF 108: introduction to terrorism (3), LENF 235: internship (3), PSCI 105: American government – policy making, and SOCI 231: juvenile delinquency.
