On the morning of Wednesday November 11, Lynchburg-Clay High School hosted its annual Veterans Day program.  The program was conducted by the school’s student council members and advisor, Mrs. Michelle Truman.
When the veterans arrived, they were greeted by student council members and provided with doughnuts, cookies, and beverages.  The program began with the introduction of all the veterans who were present.  Most of them are local residents who attend the program every year.  Following the introduction, Mr. Kenneth Carr led the high school band in two patriotic selections, “America the Beautiful On Parade” and “Salute to America’s Finest”.  When the band finished, Mr. Gary Heaton rose as the guest speaker.
Heaton was a member of the U.S. Army, is a retired state highway patrolman, and currently serves as the Highland County Commissioner.  He spoke about the hardships of serving our country and the lessons he has learned from being in the military.  He lightened his speech up by adding in small jokes, but the audience received several thought-provoking messages and helpful advice.
After Heaton’s speech, Mrs. Hatten, the building’s administrator, asked all of the veterans to stand and face the student body for a round of applause.  They received a standing ovation as they exited the cafetorium to move outdoors for the rest of the ceremony.  Once the students and staff had moved outside, the flag was lowered to half-staff for the Highland County Honor Guard’s 21-gun salute.  Alberta Duncan, a member of the VFW Post 9094 Ladies Auxiliary and 10 year bugler, along with Mr. Kenneth Carr played Taps, following the salute.
The school thanks the veterans who participated in the program and hopes to have another successful ceremony next November.[[In-content Ad]]
