Library receives LSTA Grant

In 2009 the State Library of Ohio in conjunction with Ohioana began a program to encourage reading in Ohio of Ohio authors. The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) set aside money for this venture.
In December of 2011, the State Library of Ohio awarded $24,550 for six LSTA Choose to Read Ohio grants.
Hillsboro City Schools was awarded $9,937 in a grant that runs from April 1-Sept. 30, 2012.
The project, a collaborative one, includes Hillsboro City Schools, Southern State Community College, and Highland County District Library.
In April, the Hillsboro High School ninth-grade English classes will read "Two Girls of Gettysburg," written by Lisa Klein, and teachers will use the Choose to Read Ohio toolkit for discussion.
An author visit in May will culminate this phase of the project. To encourage summer learning and reading, all students will receive a reading list which focuses on the grant theme Historical Secrets and Struggles that Divide Us.
Students who participate in the voluntary summer reading program will have the opportunity to attend several summer reading incentive events in September including a visit to local Underground Railroad sites and/or an e-visit by author Tony Abbott.
The project will culminate with plays by Susan Banyas including “The Hillsboro Story” presented to the high school students and “No Strangers Here Today” presented to the middle school.
A community performance of the popular “The Hillsboro Story” will take place on Sept. 28 at Southern State Community College.
LSTA was enacted on Sep. 30, 1996 and enables public, school, academic and special libraries to apply for federal library funds. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership, and lifetime learning through the support of museum and library programs. IMLS provides LSTA funds each year to the State Library of Ohio.
This year, Choose to Read Ohio awards ranged from $1,222 to $9,937, and grants were approved for three school districts and three public libraries. LSTA and the State Library encourage applications that demonstrate partnering between public and school libraries and other community organizations.
