The Lynchburg-Clay Envirothon team competed June 2-4 at Wilmington College in the Ohio Envirothon competition. The Lynchburg-Clay Gold team consisting of Captain Abigail Shepherd, Gage Thompson, Cloe Williamson, Kylie O’Connor and Autumn Blankenship won first place on the Forestry test station and overall first place.
They earned the right to represent Ohio at the international Envirothon competition, which is called the NCF Envirothon, and will take place July 20-26 at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Four members of this year’s team were on the team that won the Ohio Envirothon and competed at the international competition last year held in Geneva, N.Y.
Envirothon is an outdoor competition that tests five-member teams on their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife, and an environmental topic which changes yearly. This year’s environmental topic is “Roots and Resiliency: Fostering Forest Stewardship in a Canopy of Change.”
At the state competition, teams create a five-minute oral presentation based on a scenario about that year’s environmental topic. At the international level, it is a 20-minute presentation.
Over 20,000 high school students from the United States, Canada, China, and Singapore compete to represent their state, province or country at the NCF Envirothon, which is an annual international competition held in the United States or Canada. Each year, about 50 teams compete at the NCF Envirothon, where the top 10 teams will win thousands in scholarships and awards.
We want to wish the Lynchburg-Clay Envirothon team good luck as they represent Ohio at the NCF Envirothon.
