Informational sessions set for SSCC nursing programs

Nursing informational sessions will be held from 9-10 a.m. and from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in Room 106 of Southern State Community College's Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The sessions are for those interested in learning more about the Practical Nursing program (PN) and/or the Associate Degree Nursing Program (RN) offered by the college.
The nursing program has moved forward on several improvements, including integration of the Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs and a competitive-entry format, and those changes are showing positive results.
"The new integrated system supports our students on a career pathway," said Dr. Julianne Krebs, SSCC Director of Nursing. "Students can complete the first-year Practical Nursing Program and at that point, they can choose to stay and complete the second-year Associate Degree Program, or they can choose to step out, test for licensure and begin work as an LPN."
The nursing program also is closing in on its first year under the new competitive-entry format, which began with the Spring 2011 entering class. In the past, if applicants met all entry requirements to the college's ADN program, they were placed on a waiting list and admitted to the program according to their wait-list number. For the Spring 2011 round of applications, however, the highest-scoring applicants gained admittance.
"The competitive entry process was designed to select the most highly prepared applicants to enter the nursing program," said Dr. Krebs. "The applicants must complete pre-requisite courses and achieve the required minimum standards before they submit an application to the nursing program."
Also this past year, graduates in Southern State's PN program were ranked No. 1 in the nation for first-time NCLEX-PN pass rates of 100 percent for calendar year 2011. Additionally, the Southern State ADN graduates have ranked 20th out of 79 programs in the state of Ohio. The first-time NCLEX-RN pass rate for SSCC's last cohort is currently 93.61 percent, which is considerably above the national average and required benchmark.
