Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA members compete in Ag Diagnostics CDE
Two Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA Chapter members had the opportunity to put their mechanical skills to the test. Zach Askren (senior) and Kenny Shawhan competed in the Ag Diagnostics Career Development Event through an online test and in-person competition.
In the online test, these two members were challenged to identify proper equipment, outline safe procedures in a shop, and describe the steps for troubleshooting different types of equipment.
This part of the contest allowed Zach and Kenny to expand their equipment knowledge while proving what they already have experience in. The online test is the first part of this exam that proves all contestants have the proper knowledge to compete in this contest and be proficient in a similar career.
Near the end of February, Zach and Kenny made their way to the in-person portion of this career development. During the school day, they both traveled to the Ag-Pro location in Wilmington to put their skills to the test.
Zach and Kenny were challenged to perform various tasks on agricultural-related machinery. They both traced wires, tested fuses and checked various sensors as well as other mechanical and electrical issues. These simple problems that can cause big problems allow Zach and Kenny to become more familiar with all types of machinery.
Before this competition, the two contestants spent lots of time dedicated to practicing for this competition. The Ag-Pro location in Hillsboro was generous enough to volunteer their time, equipment and knowledgeable team to help prepare both Zach and Kenny. The Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA Chapter is very appreciative of Ag-Pro for taking the time to help grow our young leaders.
Zach Askren said this about the contest, “I am very appreciative of the people that we worked with at both Ag-Pros. Everyone was very welcoming and knowledgeable and had a genuine passion in making sure that we learned something every time.”
The Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA Chapter is proud of this team of two who placed fifth in District 9. Congratulations.
