than 20 years ago when family and friends of a slain federal Drug Enforcement Administration agent wore red ribbons to honor his memory after he was kidnapped, tortured and murder by a drug cartel. The nationwide non-profit Drug-Free Action Alliance organizes Ohio’s Red Ribbon Celebration, has chosen the theme: WE ELECT TO BE DRUG FREE.
“This year’s theme is to showcase that young people have the potential to achieve their dreams when they make drug-free choices,” Drug-Free Action Alliance Executive Director Patricia Harmon said. “Schools and communities across Ohio and the nation celebrating Red Ribbon Week to reinforce year-round substance abuse prevention efforts.”
This year at Hillsboro City Schools held a poster contest in the middle school set up by Janet Fair the Student Assistant and Prevention Specialist and the Middle Schools Art Teacher, Sarah Horsley. This was for grades 6th to 8th with prizes provided by local area merchants: Alley 21, Ponderosa, and Holtfield Station. Winners for 6th grade were: Sam Shoaff, Emma Hedges and Dustin Pendell, 7th grade:Emily Myers, Faith Meddleton and Emily Griffith, 8th grade: Brittney Brown, Kennedy Watson and Erin Hagan.
