Hillsboro City Schools, FRS commemorate Red Ribbon Week

Lead Summary
By
Janet Fair-
Hillsboro City Schools & FRS Counseling will be participating in the annual Ohio Red Ribbon Celebration October 23-31, 2009. The red ribbon symbol began more than 20 years ago when family and friends of a slain federal Drug Enforcement Administration agent wore red ribbons to honor his memory. The nationwide non-profit Drug-Free Action Alliance organizes Ohio’s Red Ribbon Celebration and has chosen the theme: WE ELECT TO BE DRUG FREE.

“This year’s theme is to showcase that young people have the potential to achieve their dreams when they make drug-free choices,” Drug-Free Action Alliance Executive Director Patricia Harmon said. “Schools and communities across Ohio and the nation will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week to reinforce year-round substance abuse prevention efforts.”
This year at Hillsboro City Schools we will be holding our kick off at Friday’s night football game with ribbons passed out at the gates. A poster contest set up by the schools Art Teachers in grades 6-12 with prizes provided by local area merchants: Alley 21, Star Cinema, Ponderosa, Domino’s, Pizza Hut, Subway, Wal-Mart, Movie Gallery and Crowe Financial. During the week, we will have pledges set up in the cafeteria for students to pledge to be drug free. Each day the students in 4th to 8th will receive red ribbons, bracelets (supplied by Crowe Financial), pencils, buttons and stickers. The grade school will also be watching a video by Kelly Bear. On Friday an agent from the Ohio Investigative Unit will be presenting an assembly on the "The Sober Truth," a program that educates youth about Ohio's liquor and tobacco laws and the consequences involved if they violate the law.
