Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society; between 15 and 30 percent of students are bullies or victims. Last week at Whiteoak High School, the Service Learning class sponsored “Be the Change Week.”
The purpose of this week to was put an end to bullying; and if you are a bully, to make a change to stop your actions. Each day was centered around a different lesson on anti-bullying.
Monday was sweats day (don't sweat it, be comfortable in your own skin). Tuesday was stereotype day (it's okay to be who you are). Wednesday was fashion disaster day (it doesn't matter what you wear); and Thursday was jerzday (you don't have to be an actor/actress to be liked by others).
Students participated in many activities such as watching a movie on bullying, name that tune, and having a fashion show, along with sharing bullying facts and information. On Friday, everyone was encouraged to wear purple in memory of those who lost their lives to the struggles of bullying.
Junior high students also heard a message from D.A.R.E. Officer Bobby Stroop on the seriousness and legal aspects of bullying. He encouraged them to join forces to stop the bullying.
We would like to thank our community partners: A-1 Building, Designs by Tina (Tina Chambers), Kroger, McDonald's of Hillsboro, Merchants National Bank, Kreations by Kara, Kelly's Kupcakes, and all the students and staff for their participation.
