12 students celebrated as Lindsey Wilson College inaugural graduating class

HILLSBORO- History was made Tuesday night as the Lindsey Wilson College School of Professional Counseling held a pinning ceremony to celebrate the inaugural graduating class from the college's Southern State Community Campus.
A total of 12 students were pinned - 11 students were honored for earning a bachelor of arts degree in human services and counseling, and one student was honored for earning a master of education degree in counseling and human development.
"There may be at some point larger classes, but there will never be a first class again," LWC School of Professional Counseling Dean John Rigney told the graduates. "You have my respect for what you have done."
Thanks to an innovative partnership between LWC and Southern State Community College, students can earn a bachelor's degree in human services and counseling or a master's degree in counseling and human development in less than two years while taking evening and weekend classes at the community college's Hillsboro campus. The classes are taught by LWC faculty.
Rigney urged the graduates to use the "same courage and faith in their careers" as they did by being the inaugural cohort at the community campus.
The program's graduates will enter the mental-health and counseling professions where they will serve residents of southeastern Ohio.
In his keynote address, LWC instructor Steve Durkee told the graduates that they "are the future of the human services ministry and outreach in this community."
"You are the ones who will lead human services and the agencies in this immediate surrounding area," he said.
Durkee told the graduates that because they will work in a helping profession, thousands of lives will be changed.
"You all are truly compassionate people," Durkee said. "There are clients waiting to be served by you - each of you are the one that will make a difference. Each of you will have literally thousands of clients that will only be best-served by you. Had you not been here, they wouldn't get the service."
Founded in 1903, Lindsey Wilson College is a vibrant liberal arts college located in Columbia, Ky. Affiliated with the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, the college enrolled a record 2,341 students and graduated a record 521 students in 2009-10. The college offers a bachelor of arts degree in 20 career majors, a bachelor of science degree in two career areas, and a master's degree in three career areas.
