Young, Barnett honored by Whiteoak baseball

MOWRYSTOWN — Recently before the start of Whiteoak baseball games against Fairfield and Fayetteville, the Whiteoak baseball program honored two of their greatest players in Kip Young and Ryan Barnett.
Both now have their respective numbers retired and have a plaque outside the backstop at the Whiteoak baseball field.
Barnett received his plaque on Thursday, April 12 and Young received his on Thursday, April 5 as both WHS grads tossed a ceremonial first pitch to current Whiteoak catcher Jesse Bradds.
Each individual plaque states:
Kip Young, No. 21
Kip graduated from Whiteoak High School in 1972 and Bowling Green State University in 1976. He was a member of the 1971 Southern Hills League Championship team at WHS. While at Bowling Green, he was named to the all-MAC team 3 times. His 37 career wins are the most in MAC history. He compiled a 1.02 ERA in 1974 and his 232 strikeouts and 292 innings pitched are also Bowling Green records. He was inducted into the BGSU athletic hall of fame in 1976.
Young was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 23rd round of the 1976 amateur draft. He made his major league debut on July 21, 1978 in relief against the California Angels. He followed with four wins in four starts. In his first major league start on July 24, 1978, Young pitched a complete game and held the Oakland A’s to one run. His major league career ended after the 1979 season. Kip’s career major league statistics include an 8-9 win-loss record with a 3.86 ERA and 71 strikeouts.[[In-content Ad]]

Ryan Barnett, No. 14
Ryan graduated from Whiteoak High School in 2001 and attended Northern Kentucky University. He was a member of the 1999 and 2000 Southern Hills League Championship teams at WHS. Barnett was All Ohio in 2000 and 2001, while serving as team captain. He holds school records in seven offensive categories and is one of the most prolific hitters in Ohio high school history. Ryan is included in the state record book for most hits in a season (57), consecutive hits on two occasions (11), batting average for a season (.626) and career batting average (.483). His 2000 season was one to be remembered. While anchoring the defense from shortstop, he scored 48 runs with 57 hits, 10 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs, 25 walks, 42 RBI, a .945 slugging percentage, .718 on base percentage and a .626 batting average. A truly remarkable season, at any level of competition.
