Wildcats play close, fall to Peebles

The Whiteoak Wildcats may be working on various aspects of their program this season, but on Friday night they played a close game on the road for three quarters, but fell short in the final eight minutes as they lost in a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game to the Peebles Indians by a 65-50 score.
For three quarters, the Wildcats (0-1) played the Indians very close, as they trailed by just three points at the conclusion of the first quarter by a 23-20 score. In the second, the Wildcats outscored the host Peebles squad, 13-11 for a 34-33 deficit after 18 minutes of play.
Then came the third quarter where it was a one-point differential in the scoring, as this time Peebles outscored the Wildcats, 13-12 in the third to build a lead of 47-45.
In the fourth, things fell apart for the Wildcats in the scoring column where they were held to just five points, while Peebles broke away with 18 points for what turned into a 15-point win.
“We played a tough game,” WHS head coach Blake Kibler said. “It was neck and neck going into the fourth quarter. It really was a closer game than what the final score projects. We had to foul and have a shot at the end. Our kids played so hard. We are really proud of them.
“Our main focus this year is to do things the right way and move in the right direction. We did that (Friday). Peebles is a premier team in the league with arguably one of the best players in the SHAC (Tanner Arey). He was special tonight.
“Our defense was good. We made a few adjustments, but it was solid. Offensively, we needed to pound the ball more inside and play a little more of our ball down the stretch. We have Felicity on Tuesday, so we get to compete right away and try to keep moving forward, but again, very pleased with our guys tonight.”
The Wildcats were led in scoring by Stephen Ross with 13 points, while also having five rebounds and one assist. Ross made two two-point baskets and three 3-pointers.
Michael Crowe followed with 12 points (four two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and one free throw conversion) along with six rebounds and three assists.
The Wildcats also had seven points from Zach Rand (three rebounds) and Traeten Hamilton (one 3-pointer). Hamilton also tallied three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
Trever Yeager finished with six points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals for WHS. Also for the Wildcats, Atlee Carr scored three points (one 3-pointer, two rebounds, two assists, one block) and Trevor Martin had two points and three rebounds.
In all, the Wildcats totaled 15 two-point baskets and six 3-pointers, while grabbing 28 total rebounds (12 offensive), 11 assists and four steals.
Next for Whiteoak is a home game on Tuesday, Dec. 5 when they host Felicity in non-conference play.
