Wildcats hold on for non-conference win over Eastern Pike

The Whiteoak Wildcats scored all of their runs early and fended off a late charge by Eastern Pike for a 7-6 win, Monday at WHS.
WHS scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings, opening with a two-run first, followed by a five-run second for what was a 7-0 lead.
Eastern Pike scored one run in the third, followed by a one-run fifth and four-run sixth.
"We jumped out to a seven-run lead and then got away from doing what we do," WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. "On the positive side of that was the clutch performances at the end that preserved the win."
Jason Jones led WHS with a 2-for-4 game at the plate, with one run and two RBIs. One of his two hits was a double.
Justin Emery, Spencer Michael and Kyle Adams each had one hit. Emery scored two runs and had one RBI, while Michael scored one run and tallied one RBI. Adams collected two RBIs.
The winning pitcher was Michael, who pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out four to gain his first win of the season.
[[In-content Ad]]Andrew Herzog pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and walking two. He struck out two en route to the save, his first of the season.
"Spencer (Michael) in his first varsity start on the mound was a quality one," Veidt said. "Jason Jones had a solid night at the plate.
"Andrew Herzog was clutch with ice water in his veins. He came in with bases loaded in sixth, threw four pitches and got a pop up and ground out."
Veidt spoke about the final out of the game.
"In the seventh with two outs, and runners on first and second, Eastern Pike had their best hitter (two singles and a triple to that point) at the plate, and Andrew struck him out to end it and earn a much-deserved save."
