Wildcats fend off Rockets

The Whiteoak Wildcats on Thursday, April 12 defeated the Fayetteville Rockets in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play by a score of 9-5 at WHS.

WHS scored two runs in the first inning, followed by a one-run second and three runs in the third for a 6-0 lead after three innings.

In the fourth inning, Fayetteville plated two runs and in the fifth inning, both teams scored three runs each.

Chase Carraher led WHS at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with one run. Finishing with one run each were Ryan Roberts (one run), Trever Yeager (one walk, two runs), Caleb West (three walks, two runs) and Mason Lehr (two walks, one run).

Traeten Hamilton finished with two walks and one run, and teammate Chase Butler forced two walks. Zach Harless also forced a walk and scored one run in the game.

The winning pitcher was Hamilton (3-0) who pitched five innings, allowing four runs (one run) on three hits and four walks. Hamilton finished with six strikeouts.

Yeager pitched two innings of relief for the save. He allowed one run (none earned) on two hits and one walk. Yeager struck out three batters.

“When your pitching (Hamilton, Yeager) gives up one earned, you should win, but we just had to work a little harder than we should have,” WHS head coach Chris Veidt said. “We gave up 12 freebies, which was almost our undoing. We were very solid offensively as usual.

“Chase Carraher and Ryan Roberts had nice nights at the plate for us. Caleb West’s patience resulted in three walks and a big RBI double in the third inning. This team never quits when the game is on the line. Having a big three-run inning in the sixth sealed it for us when the game was still in doubt.”
