Wildcats falter in 4th quarter in loss to Glenwood

One quarter was the difference between the Whiteoak Wildcats trailing by just two points and eventually falling to Glenwood New Boston by 14 points in a 68-54 loss Saturday night at WHS.
After three quarters, the Wildcats trailed by just two points at 42-40 to the visitors, but too many turnovers and going over five minutes in between scoring from the field cost the Wildcats a chance at a non-conference victory.
That fourth frame saw WHS (0-3, 1-4) get to within a point at the 5:43 mark of the fourth when Zach Rand scored two points on a put-back basket, making the score 45-44 as WHS scored five straight points. The points before Rand’s were a jumper by Traeten Hamilton and a free throw from Trever Yeager.

Following Rand’s basket, the Wildcats didn’t score again with a two-point basket until there were 20 seconds left in the game when Stephen Ross scored on a layup. In between those two baskets, the Wildcats did have free throw conversions from Yeager and Hamilton.
Not scoring from the field in that aforementioned 5:00 span led to the Wildcats going from trailing by one point to trailing by a 64-50 score with 35.1 left in regulation. Following the two points by Ross, Glenwood added two free throws, and Whiteoak scored their final points of the game by Charley Skinner.
Leading WHS in scoring was Yeager with 17 points, followed by Hamilton with 13 points and Ross with 10 points. Also for WHS, Skinner and Atlee Carr each scored two points, while Rand finished with six points and Trevor Martin had four.
The first three frames were played better by the Wildcats as they trailed by just three points at the end of the first frame, including a 16-13 deficit at the end of the opening eight minutes.
WHS began the game with four straight points from Yeager, but eventually Glenwood tied the game at 6-6 and took a 9-6 advantage with 4:08 left in the opening quarter off a 3-pointer from Tyler Caldwell.
The Wildcats regained the lead at the 2:56 mark of the first with a layup from Ross for a 10-9 lead. Glenwood came back with five straight points to regain the lead, though WHS answered with a 3-pointer from Hamilton with 1:47 left in the first frame. A layup by Glenwood’s Caldwell put them in front by three points.
Whiteoak tied the score at the beginning of the second with a 3-pointer from Yeager, making it a 16-16 score with 6:37 on the scoreboard.
After both teams continued to score points, the Wildcats tied the score at 21 with 3:50 left in the quarter off two free throws from Yeager. From there, Glenwood led the rest of the frame, taking a 29-26 lead at halftime following a 8-5 scoring differential to end the second.
The game continued to be close as the third frame ended with WHS trailing 42-40 to their visiting opponent. Toward the end of the third, Hamilton sank a 3-pointer for a 40-40 score.
As for Glenwood, they were led in scoring by Kade Conley with 26 points. He scored 17 points in the fourth quarter. For the game, he was 16-of-20 from the free-throw line, and he also made five two-point baskets.
Also for Glenwood, Caldwell finished with 16 points, and Drake Truitt scored 12 points, giving GHS three players in double figures.
