Wildcats fall to Green Devils

MOWRYSTOWN — The young Whiteoak Wildcats are going through some growing pains this season, but they've continued to play a full 32 minutes with high energy and effort.
With that said, WHS head coach Jeremy McGraw knows there are improvements that his team is working on, and eventually he hopes to see those improvements. But on Tuesday night, against Southern Hills Athletic Conference opponent North Adams, the Wildcats couldn't fend off their foe, falling by a 73-47 score.
"We have to do a better job defensively," McGraw said. "We have to keep scores in the 40s and 50s, and that's tough to do with our schedule. Anytime you give up 21 points in a quarter, it's not looking good.
"We have to go back to the drawing board defensively. That's all we can do."
As for that 21-point quarter McGraw mentioned, that was the opening frame with WHS (0-4, 0-8) trailing by a 21-9 score after the first eight minutes ticked off the clock.
Though WHS was first to score points in the game, off a layup from Dillon Neal, the Wildcats never led after the 6:37 mark of the quarter following baskets by North Adams' Mikey Sheeley and Brandon Gingerich. Gingerich finished with 10 points.
Trey Meade, who stands at 6-7, led NA with 15 points, and 6-4 teammate Cole Meade followed with 14 points.
In the remainder of the first, WHS had three more points from Neal and two points each from Chase Carraher and Brandon Ashbaugh.
Carraher led WHS with 14 points in the loss. Ashbaugh finished with four points.
The second quarter for WHS saw them give up another 21 points against North Adams (3-2, 4-6), but this time they scored 11 points to trail at halftime by a 42-20 score.
In the second, six of the 11 points by WHS came from the free-throw line. Also for the Wildcats, Carraher sank a 3-pointer with 4:31 left in the quarter, then making it a 16-point deficit.
Each team scored 14 points in the third, with Carraher sinking two 3-pointers in the quarter, plus netting eight total points in the third. Neal added three points in the quarter, as did Cody McClure.[[In-content Ad]]
In a 13-point fourth frame by WHS, Zack Taggett, Trevor Martin, Kyle Adams, McClure, Carraher, Ashbaugh and Shawn Wissell all contributed to the Wildcat scoring.
"I thought Chase played well (Tuesday), and he's going to be a good player for us down the road," McGraw said. "Another player who stepped up was Cody McClure.
"Also, Kyle Adams came in and did a nice job, gave us some good minutes and played hard."
Next for WHS is a game at Fayetteville on Friday.
In JV play, NA defeated WHS, 49-46. Leading the Green Devils were Patrick England with 12 points and Christian Barnes with nine points. For WHS, Trevor Martin and Trevor Yeager led the team with 15 points each.
