Wildcats drop DH to South Webster

The Whiteoak Wildcats baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader over the weekend on Saturday, falling to the South Webster Jeeps by scores of 10-6 and 9-8 at WHS.

In the first game against SWHS, the 10-6 loss, the Wildcats trailed 2-1 after the first inning, then by a 3-1 score after two complete innings.

In the third, the Wildcats tied the score at 3-3 with a two-run third, but in the top of the fourth, the Jeeps added two more runs for a 5-3 advantage.

The fifth inning was rough on the hosts, with the Jeeps scoring five runs, while WHS tallied two. The Wildcats added one more run in the seventh inning.

Jason Jones led WHS with a perfect 4-for-4 game at the plate, hitting a double to go with his two runs and three RBIs.

"Jason (Jones) had a monster day at the plate in both games," WHS had coach Chris Veidt said.

Spencer Michael, Tyler Williams and Jacob Burns each had two hits, with Michael scoring two runs and Williams having two runs and one RBI. Williams' two hits went for extra bases, with the senior tallying a double and triple.

Justin Emery, Nick Wardlow, Steven Myers and Kyle Adams each had one hit.

The loss went to Williams. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and six walks. Williams struck out four.

Stephen Anderson pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing no runs or hits.

"Stephen (Anderson) had a great day in relief, going 5.1 innings on the day with no earned runs," Veidt said. "Giving them the big fifth inning was the difference in game one.

"We came back impressively with the tying run on deck in the seventh."

In game two, the Wildcats lost by a single run at 9-8 in extra innings.

The Jeeps led 3-0 after two and a half innings, but it was the Wildcats who had a big six-run bottom of the third for a 6-3 advantage.

In the fourth, it was the Jeeps who went back into the lead, plating four runners, while in their half of the inning, the Wildcats scored to make the score 8-7 to regain the lead.

WHS didn't hold on as SW scored one run in the fifth and the final run in the eighth inning.

Burns, Jones and Michael each had three hits, with Michael going 3-for-4 (a double) with one run and two RBIs. Jones finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, and Burns went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Adams finished 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, as one of his hits was a double.

Emery, Wardlow, Williams and Meyers each had one hit, as Emery and Wardlow each had a run.

The loss went to Anderson. He pitched three innings of relief, allowing one run (none earned runs) on two hits. Andrew Herzog pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on three hits.

Emery pitched three innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and six walks. He struck out three.

"Andrew (Herzog) had a quality relief appearance when we desperately needed it," Veidt said. "It was a solid comeback against a quality opponent.

"Having 29 hits on the day (in two games) for us was nice to see. We are just one clutch hit away from breaking out of our recent funk. This was our second extra-inning game already this year, and you can't substitute the situations that arise in close contests like that. It will pay dividends in the near future."
