Whiteoak volleyball falls in 4 sets to West Union

MOWRYSTOWN — The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats hosted the West Union Lady Dragons in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night, where it was the visitors who left with a conference win. WHS lost the SHAC match in four sets to the Lady Dragons.
WHS put up a tough battle each set, even winning the second set by a 25-17 score, but the Lady Dragons were just too strong, winning sets one, three and four. WUHS won set one by a 25-17 score and won sets three and four by a score of 25-19 on both occasions.
The loss drops WHS to 2-11 overall on the season.

West Union’s win over the Lady ’Cats began with a very strong start to the first set as they scored the first eight points of the match for an 8-0 advantage. WHS finally scored when WUHS knocked the ball out of bounds.
WUHS built a lead of 10-2, but WHS rallied to make it an 11-8 score, including their eighth point of the set off an ace from sophomore Sydnie Raines. Eventually WUHS made it a 14-8 advantage in set one, but points at the net and off an ace from seniors MaKayla Risner and Chelsea Chisman brought WHS to within three points of the Lady Dragons at 14-11.
Eventually, WUHS added to their lead, but WHS continued to battle as senior Lexi Jones scored the 14th point of the set for the Lady ’Cats to get back to within six points of the visitors at 20-14.
WUHS was too strong at the end of the first set, eventually fending off a final charge by WHS for the 25-17 win.
The second set belonged to the Lady ’Cats with WHS scoring the first four points of the set, including a spike from Raines and an ace by Baylee Carey. WHS then led by a 10-1 score as serves from Risner helped build that lead.
WHS took a 14-5 advantage later in the second set when Jones scored a point on a spike and then led at 20-6 when Carey had a dig to keep the 19th point alive, followed by a spike for the 20th point of the set. After a few minutes, WHS eventually fended off the Lady Dragons for the 25-17 set two win.
The third set finally saw a tie for the first time in the match, with the score tied at 3-3, 14-14 and 15-15. For WHS in that span, they had help with points from Jones, Macy Knoblauch (including an ace) and Risner. WUHS took the lead for good at 16-15 and never let up to earn the set three win at 25-19.
The fourth and final set saw the score tied at 1-1 and 4-4 as WUHS took the lead at 5-4 and didn’t let it go for the remainder of the match. Whiteoak did have some scoring from Jones and Knoblauch. Jones was part of a WHS streak of five straight points, following a timeout, with serves.
Even with WHS getting to a 21-16 score, that wasn’t close enough as the Lady Dragons were able to close out the match with a 25-19 win.
