Whiteoak Lady Wildcats gain victory in Silver Grove

The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats gained what was their first win of the season on Wednesday night, going on the road and crossing the state line to defeat the Silver Grove Lady Trains in Kentucky by a 48-38 score.
Whiteoak’s non-conference win over Silver Grove included Megan Botts earning a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, plus she added two assists. Botts also made a 3-pointer in the win and was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.
Also for WHS, Cylee Bratton led the way with a game-high 17 points, scoring 15 of those points in the second half. Bratton was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the second half, and she totaled nine rebounds.

Ending the first quarter with a lead of 11-7 over Silver Grove, the Lady Wildcats led by a 21-17 score at halftime as each team scored 10 points in the second frame.
In the third quarter, Whiteoak outscored the Lady Trains 13-10, and in the fourth, WHS won the quarter by a 14-11 scoring differential.
“We didn’t play a really strong team, but it was good to get a win,” WHS head coach Steve Smith told The Highland County Press. “We didn’t play really well in the first half but played better in the second half.
“We had more output in the second half, and we got to do a few more things. We pressured better and forced 38 turnovers. This is a good win for the girls. We’ve had some tough losses this season in our rebuilding, so it was good to see the girls show they can win.”
Kara Ward — who had her glasses broken — scored 11 points in the Lady ’Cats win, making three 3-pointers and one two-point field goal.
Also scoring points for WHS were Courtney Gross with seven points (5-of-8 from the free-throw line) and Hailey Monteith, who scored three points.
In all for the Lady ’Cats, they totaled 11 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers and they were 14-of-20 from the free-throw line. WHS also forced 38 turnovers and out-rebounded Silver Grove, 34-17.
Next for WHS is a home non-conference game on Monday, Jan. 22 vs. Northwest.
