Whiteoak Lady ‘Cats gain victory in postseason opener

MOWRYSTOWN — The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats kept their season alive on Monday evening as the No. 7 seeded team gained a first round Division IV Sectional win against the visiting No. 10 seeded Glenwood New Boston Lady Tigers by a 10-2 score.
In all, the Lady 'Cats totaled 11 hits, 11 walks and were hit by a pitch twice.
Both teams were scoreless in the first inning of the sectional opener, but the two teams ended up being tied after three innings as Whiteoak was first to score, plating two runs in the bottom of the second, with the inning beginning with a base hit by Megan Dodds (2-for-4, one walk). She stole second base and eventually scored on an error by the third baseman off a throw from the catcher.
The second run scored as Ashlyn Moore rounded the bases and crossed home plate off a one-out single by Megan Botts, who was 2-for-4 for the game.
WHS hit a bump in the road at the top of the third inning with two New Boston runners scoring runs, as there were multiple errors committed in the inning by the Lady 'Cats, leaving the score at 2-2.
From the fourth inning on, the Lady 'Cats took over the game, moving ahead by a 4-2 score after the fourth inning was completed, then adding three runs in the fifth and capping off their offense with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the eight-run victory.

In the fourth, the tied score was broken up with Hayley Nace batting in Jaycie Parr (1-for-2, HBP, two walks) with one out on a ground ball back to the pitcher for a 3-2 lead, then with two outs Chelsea Chisman hit a line drive to left field to score Ashleigh Harless (three walks, three runs).
The fifth inning began with Courtney Gross (3-for-5) reaching base on a one-out single and eventually scoring on a base hit past the shortstop by Parr. Parr then later scored with a head-first slide to home, and Harless scored on a bases-loaded walk by Dodds for what turned into a 7-2 lead.
Whiteoak's final three runs were scored by Botts, Parr and Harless, with Nace (1-for-3, two walks) hitting a double in the sixth inning, while Botts had a single, Parr walked, Harless reached on an error, Chisman was hit by a pitch and Dodds had a fielders choice.
Also for WHS, Lexi Jones was 1-for-3 with one walk and was hit by a pitch.
Gross was also the winning pitcher, allowing two runs (both unearned) on two hits, one walk and one hit batter. WHS committed four errors.
The Lady 'Cats move to the sectional finals on Thursday, May 12 at 5 p.m., when they will faced the No. 2 seeded Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers.
