SHL returning to official name of SHAC starting in fall of '13

The Southern Hills League is going to have a name change … sort of.
Back in its inaugural year during the 1969-70 season, the SHL wasn't officially called the Southern Hills League. In fact, under its bylaws and constitution, the league was officially named the Southern Hills Athletic Conference, and due to tax purposes set by the government and the IRS, the league will go back to its roots, so to speak. Starting next fall, all trophies will read and the league will officially be called the SHAC.
"Back when the bylaws were first drafted in 1969 it was originally called the Southern Hills Athletic Conference," league commissioner Jerry Lewis said. "With all the government regulations following laws after 9-11 for non-profit organizations, we must go back to the original name for legal purposes even though we don't have to pay taxes being non-profit. This is the first year the name situation has come to our attention.
"Everyone has always called it the Southern Hills League, but in the original constitution, it says the league has always officially been named the Southern Hills Athletic Conference."
According to the IRS website, a non-profit organization is an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive. Nonprofit corporations are exempt from the income taxes that affect other corporations but only if they conduct business exclusively for the benefit of the general public. State laws on corporations vary from state to state. Nonprofit organizations include churches, soup kitchens, charities, political associations, business leagues, fraternities, sororities, sports leagues, colleges and universities, hospitals, museums, television stations, symphonies and public interest law firms.[[In-content Ad]]
Commissioner Lewis said the league will keep the SHL name for the remainder of this year on all trophies and banners, but legally, as of now, the league is called the SHAC, and starting in the fall of '13, all trophies and banners awarded will have the SHAC name and logo printed on them.
"All non-profit organizations must do paperwork every year now showing where every penny is spent. We just did 60 pages of it recently," Lewis said. "We have to use the official name in our bylaws and what is used for our tax code because that is what the government says must be done.
"We are just following the law and what the government tells us we have to do."
The SHL (or SHAC) began in the fall of '69 and had its first year of competition in the fall of 1970-71. The league currently consists of 10 teams in Fairfield, Whiteoak, Lynchburg-Clay, Peebles, West Union, Manchester, North Adams, Ripley, Eastern Brown and Fayetteville High Schools, split into two divisions of small and large schools.
Original members of the league were: Eastern Brown, Fairfield, Fayetteville, Georgetown, Hamersville, Jefferson, Lynchburg-Clay, Mount Orab, North Adams, Ripley, West Union and Whiteoak. Manchester and Peebles joined the league for the 1971-72 school year, while Adams County combined into four schools with Jefferson closing in 1972.
Other schools formerly part of the league that have since left are The School of Brown County Ursulines (a parochial girls school), Western Latham and Georgetown.
