Lions, Mangus win SHL Championship

The Southern Hills League Cross-Country Championships were held Saturday (Oct. 13) at Ripley High School, where the Fairfield Lions boys team captured the title for the second consecutive season, led by Michael Mangus, who was the individual champion for the third consecutive year.
The Lions had the low score of 39 followed by West Union (59), Lynchburg-Clay (65), Eastern Brown (95), Ripley (137), Fayetteville (152) and Manchester, seventh place by losing the tie-breaker with the sixth man, also scored 152.
Peebles, North Adams, and Whiteoak did not field complete teams.
Mangus' first place and SHL championship time was 16:27. Following Mangus was Blake Hildebrant in third at 17:25.
For the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs, they were led by Quinn Stoltz in sixth at 17:58 and Gage Waits in seventh at 18:10.
Also for FHS, Wyatt Crothers was eighth at 18:24; Dustin Willey, 11th (18:33); Matthew Leach, 16th (18:52); Zach Schmitz, 17th (18:58); John Cain, 19th (19:09); Brant Huff, 25th (19:54); Layne Irvin, 55th (22:52); and Jacob Rammel, 58th (23:05).

For Whiteoak, their highest finisher was Cody Feck in 30th with a time of 20:32. Tyler Roberts was 35th with a time of 21:05.
In the girls SHL race, Fayetteville was the winner with 55 points, followed by Ripley (67), Manchester (71), Whiteoak (76), Fairfield (103) and Lynchburg-Clay (109). Peebles, North Adams, West Union and Eastern Brown did not field complete teams.
Leading the way for Fairfield was Kaitlin Evans finishing 4th with a time of 22:12. Next were Brenna Simmons, 19th, 24:41; Kaylee Crum, 21st, 24:46; Shaylee Carson, 35th, 28:48; and Brianna Evans, 38th, 32:21.
For WHS, Clarissa Johnson was 12th at 23:26, and Jennah Lomske was 13th at 23:28. LeAnna Lomske was 16th at 23:49. Also for WHS, Courtney Cummings was 23rd (25:14), Regan Bohrer was 25th (26:30) and Olivia Lomske was 41st (34:36).
As for the LC team, Laney Lewis led in 11th at 23:19, followed by Morgan Fittro at 18th with a time of 24:35. Also for LC, results included: Danielle Coleman, 28th (26:43); and Ginny Gadzinski, 30th (27:01).
On Saturday, Oct. 20 at Rio Grande University, local teams will be participating in the Southeast District Championships. The Fairfield boys are the number-one top seed in Boys Division III.
