Lady Mustangs ease by Lady ’Cats in SHAC play

MOWRYSTOWN — Leading by just eight points following the first quarter of their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game against the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, LC exploded for 34 points in the second frame, easing to an 81-37 victory over the host Lady ’Cats.
The Thursday night win by LC moves them to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the SHAC. WHS falls to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Whiteoak played close with LC in the first quarter as they trailed by a 19-11 score after the first frame, even with LC starting out with a 12-2 lead with around 3:00 minutes to go in the quarter. WHS answered with a 9-3 run of their own to get to within four points of LC at 15-11 with 32 seconds left in the first frame.
The run for the Lady ’Cats began with a jumper from Morgan Thompson, followed by points in the paint by Chelsea Chisman. LC’s points came from a 3-pointer by Hannah Binkley, but that was followed with a jumper from Chisman (who totaled 10 points) and a 3-pointer from Maggie Carr for a 15-11 score. Carr led WHS with 14 points, including two 3-pointers for the game.

LC ended the first quarter with four straight points for the 19-11 score.
“We came out and played a little flat in the first quarter,” LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. “The intensity wasn’t there like it usually is, but in the second quarter we really picked it up. Offensively, we executed a lot better (in the second quarter).
“The thing that stood out the most for me is we had eight turnovers, and we took care of the basketball. We are averaging around 16 turnovers a game, so I was really happy with how we took care of the basketball.”
Leading the Lady Mustangs in scoring were Peyton Scott and McKayla Binkley with 27 points each. Scott made eight two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
McKayla Binkley was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, with two 3-pointers and eight two-point field goals.
“McKayla has been having some really good games,” Lewis said. “She’s been playing really aggressive and with confidence. The biggest thing with her is she is playing in a role she’s not had before. She used to be our point guard, and now she’s playing down low, muscling up with the big kids underneath, and she’s filling our that role pretty well for us.
“Peyton has been playing really well too with all that she does for us.”
In between the break from the end of the first to the start of the second frame, the intensity of the Lady Mustangs went to an entirely different level as LC outscored the Lady ’Cats, 34-10 in the second frame, resulting in a 53-21 lead at the half.
LC and WHS exchanged points on two occasions to open the second quarter, then from the 7:10 mark to the 4:15 mark of the quarter, LC outscored WHS with a 15-0 run for a 38-15 score.
The run began with 3-pointers from Hannah and McKayla Binkley, followed by a steal and layup by Scott. Next were two more points by McKayla Binkley, then five straight points by Scott, including a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass from McKayla Binkley to complete the run.
After two quick points by Whiteoak’s Cylee Bratton, LC added four more points with a put-back in the paint by McKayla Binkley and an unguarded jumper from Scott for a 42-17 lead.
After the two teams exchanged baskets again, LC ended the second frame with eight straight points off a layup by Lexi Waits, a jumper from Scott, two free throws from Waits and a jumper by Hannah Binkley for the 32-point lead at the half.
Hannah Binkley finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers and four two-point field goals.
From there, the game was out of reach for WHS in the second half, with LC adding 19 points in the third and nine points in the fourth quarter. Third- quarter scoring for LC was credited to Zoe Fittro, Waits, Scott and Hannah and McKayla Binkley.
In the fourth frame for LC, Scott and the Binkleys combined for the nine points.
As for WHS, they scored six points in the third and 10 points in the fourth. The Lady ’Cats had third-quarter scoring from Lexi Jones, Thompson and Bratton. In the fourth, WHS had seven points from Carr, including a 3-pointer, and a 3-pointer by Thompson, as she finished with seven points on the night.
For the game, WHS was 4-of-9 from the free-throw line and made a total of three 3-pointers. LC was a perfect 9-of-9 with their free-throw attempts and totaled eight 3-pointers.
LC will play a non-conference game on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Alexander. WHS will next take the court on Monday, Dec. 19 at Fayetteville.
