Lady Mustangs control game for win over Lady 'Cats

DODSONVILLE — From start to finish, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs controlled all aspects of their game in the 2012 Wilkin Memorial Scholarship Tournament, advancing to the finals of the tourney with a final score of 73-38.
For the girls, this was the first year they took part in the tournament, and they will play for the championship Saturday evening as they will take on Paint Valley, who defeated Clermont Northeastern, 44-35. WHS will play in the consolation game as they face CNE.
"We hadn't played for around a week and a half, so we were a little bit rusty early on," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "We have to get back to game mode.
"The important thing was we got the win and played hard. Everyone played well, but we just need to continue to work on some aspects of our game."
As for the Lady Mustangs (6-2), they took grip of the game's tempo and didn't release it until the final buzzer sounded as they led 19-3 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
From there, LC led 30-15 at the half and ran away in the third frame with a 30-point lead, leading 53-23 after 24 minutes. In the fourth, LC outscored the Lady 'Cats, 18-15.
For LC, they began the game with a 9-0 run as Laney Lewis (who led all scorers with 18 points), Morgan Fittro (15 total points) and Shelby Stewart put LC out front. The scoring drive was stopped by Whiteoak's Emma Wardlow with a free throw. Wardlow finished the game with a team-high 13 points.
WHS (1-7) didn't make a field goal in the opening quarter as the Lady Mustangs forced numerous turnovers in the first eight minutes.

LC ended the first frame on a 10-2 run (in a span of just over 5:00) as Fittro and Lewis made free throws, and Emma Setty sank a put-back bucket. Lewis followed with two free-throw conversions.
The rest of the LC scoring in the opening frame came from Madysyn Creighton and Lewis for the 16-point lead.
In the second frame, with LC resting some starters, the Lady Wildcats outscored LC, 12-11. For LC in the quarter, Ali Little scored four points (14 points for the game), as did Lewis. Creighton scored two points in the third, and Ryleigh Jackson added one point.
For WHS in the second, Brittany Luman scored five points, while Wardlow also added five, including a 3-pointer with 5:02 left on the clock. Amber Gorman added two points in the frame.
In the third, Fittro broke loose with two 3-pointers and a total of 10 points in the eight-minute span. Little added eight points in the quarter for LC, and Lewis scored five as the Lady Mustangs outscored their visiting opponent, 23-8.
WHS had balanced scoring in the third with Emily Stratton, Luman, Courtney Cummings and Wardlow each adding two points.
For the final quarter, the host LC team led, 20-15. In that frame, LC had two points from Fittro, three from Creighton and two by Lewis. Also in the quarter, Sarah Spidel scored four points, Jackson (who finished with five points) added four points off two jumpers and Setty scored five (finishing with seven points).
In the WHS fourth, Cummings totaled five points, including a 3-pointer, while Wardlow made five free throws, Sunnie Lehr scored four points and Luman made one shot from the charity stripe.
