Lady Indians top county counterpart Whiteoak

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Lady Indians gained their fifth win of the season Wednesday night, as they took down their Highland County counterpart Whiteoak, 69-44 in non-league play.
The win sends Hillsboro to an overall mark of 5-10 on the year, as they have seven games remaining in the regular season. The loss sends the Lady Wildcats to 1-14 overall.
HHS head coach JR Moberly spoke about the remaining slate of games and what he wants to see from his team before the postseason begins.
"I just want to see us grow," he said. "We need to improve at the little things, but I do know the girls will always play hard for us."
In the first quarter and the early stages of the second frame against WHS, the Lady Indians scored at least 15 straight points as they held onto a 27-5 lead with 7:02 left in the second quarter.
Obtaining that feat began in the first frame as points by Faith Middleton put HHS ahead 14-5 with 2:41 left in the frame. Madison Snyder followed with a layup, and Taylor Moberly sank two free throws. Snyder added another two points, and Kaylynn Bell made the score 23-5 with 9.5 left on the first-quarter clock. Bell finished with 11 points, as did Snyder.
Moberly began the second with a jumper, and the scoring run was capped off with Snyder sinking a basket.
Emily Stratton broke up the run by HHS with points at the 5:51 mark of the second, but Taylor Stanforth and Trista Rhodes (who had three points in the first quarter) were there for HHS to make it a 22-point HHS advantage.
Rhodes led all scorers with 24 points. She was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Following a layup from Whiteoak's Amber Gorman, Rhodes made two free throws and followed up with two more points for a 24-point HHS lead.
Courtney Cummings answered for the Lady 'Cats as she began what was a 9-0 run for WHS as she scored the first four points, followed by a 3-pointer by Sunnie Lehr and a layup by Gorman, cutting the HHS lead to 34-19.

HHS ended the second with a 6-1 run as Moberly and Rhodes each made two free throws and Rhodes ended the quarter scoring with a steal and points on a fast break, giving HHS a 40-20 lead at the half.
"We did a lot of things well," Moberly said. "We shot the ball well and got out into transition. Kaylynn distributed the ball well, and Trista finished. We had kids step up at the free-throw line as well."
The Lady Indians outscored WHS 15-12 in the third, and in the fourth, HHS had 14 points, while WHS scored 12 more points for a 24-point second half.
"We are still making silly, but correctable mistakes," WHS head coach Mike Cooper said. "We have to get back into the gym, work hard and try to improve.
"We scored over 40 points tonight, and that's a plus."
For WHS in the second half, scoring points were Lehr, Ashleigh Harless, Clarissa Johnson, Cummings and Emma Wardlow.
Leading WHS in scoring was Wardlow with 17 points, as she made a first-quarter 3-pointer and went 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. Cummings followed with seven points, and Gorman tallied five. Rounding out the WHS scoring were Lehr and Stratton with five points each and Johnson with four.
As a team, WHS was 9-of-22 as HHS was 24-of-38.
As for the HHS second half, they totaled 29 points combined in the third and fourth frames. Scoring points in those quarters were Middleton, Moberly, Snyder, Rhodes, Mariah Burns, Reaghan Haines, Bell and Tyeika Cumberland, who made a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Middleton and Moberly each totaled eight points, while Cumberland added three and Burns scored two. Stanforth and Haines each sank a free throw.
In JV play, HHS defeated the Lady 'Cats, 44-15. Leading HHS in JV play were Kirsten Juillerat with 17 points and Tyeika Cumberland with eight. Scoring for WHS were Jayde Parr with 13 and Makayla Wescott with two.
The Lady Indians are scheduled to play again on Saturday, Jan. 19 as they travel to face the Washington Lady Blue Lions with a JV start of 12 p.m. WHS will play again on Thursday, Jan. 17 as they travel to face West Union in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play with a JV start of 6 p.m.
