McDermott - The Whiteoak Lady Wildcats are moving on in the 2010 Division IV SE District Sectional tournament as they had a strong offensive output in the middle quarters for a 46-38 victory over Portsmouth Notre Dame, at Northwest High School Wednesday evening.
The win was the third of the season for the Lady 'Cats as they previously defeated Felicity and Hillsboro.
Whiteoak trailed by five points after the first quarter wrapped up, but doubled their first quarter output in the second frame with a 16-point effort to take a 24-17 lead at the half.
Things continued to go the way of the Lady 'Cats as they won the third by a score of 17-12 to control the game at 41-29. In the fouth the Lady 'Cats held back, forcing the Lady Titans to send WHS to the line, as Notre Dame won the final eight minute period 9-5.
"We started off slow in the first as our only scoring in the quarter were the two 3-pointers by Haley Bingamon and two points from Sarah Smith," Whiteoak head coach Steve Smith said. "In the second we got Emily (Hargett) involved and she scored seven points in the quarter."
One thing Smith credited to the win was their defensive play.
"Liz Carson and Kristen Seip played well defensively and had good minutes for us," Smith said. "Marissa Bohl also did a lot for us on defense and had a good floor game.
"We changed defenses and switched presses, which caused problems in the second and third quarters for them. Going into the fourth and up by 12 we stalled and made them foul us."
Whiteoak was led in scoring by Bingamon and Emily Hargett with 16 points each. Bingamon was on target from beyond the arc with four 3-pointers (4 of 8), two in the first quarter. Hargett made six field goals and was 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. Hargett had a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds.
Jessie Gilliland, who led WHS with four steals, scored six points. Sarah Smith finished with four points, followed by Blair Maynard and Bohl with two points each.
WHS was 10 of 18 from the free-throw line.
Shupert led ND with 11 points, followed by Arnzon with 10. Sammons ended the game with nine points for ND.
"This win shows what kind of league we have to play in," Smith said. "To go to the tournament and get a win, this shows the opponents we play all season prepares us for the tournament."
The Lady 'Cats will play again Saturday as they will face No. 2 Portsmouth Clay at 2:45 p.m. at Northwest High School in the sectional final.
