Vote 'yes' on Issue 14
To the editor:
I came into office in January 2015. The number of kids in care at Highland County Children's Services ranged from 50-75.
Since then, the amount of kids in care has grown to a range of 130-190, depending on the situation. In some cases, kids are kept in care until age 21, which also puts a financial strain on the agency.
The past three years, commissioners have had to use money from the general fund to meet children's services financial obligations. This is not due to mismanagement; the administrator and his team do a fantastic job of administering the funds they have to work with.
Unfortunately, due to the increase of the number in care, there is a shortfall in funding. I don't see those numbers decreasing, if anything they will continue to grow. These kids find themselves in this situation through no fault of their own.
I urge everyone to vote "yes" on Issue 14; this will help ease the burden the agency currently experiences.
Sincerely,
Jeff Duncan
Former Highland County Commissioner
