The H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program, implemented by the Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network (LEARN), announces the release of its 2024 Annual Report, showcasing the effectiveness of wetland restoration efforts across Ohio to reduce nutrient pollution and mitigate harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Lake Erie and other state water bodies. The findings support the need to continue wetland restoration because of their ability to prevent nutrients that feed HABs from entering lakes and waterways.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, H2Ohio, and Ohio Sea Grant, in partnership with The Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory and Shores & Islands Ohio, will host the fifth annual Lake Erie Awareness Day on Thursday, Aug. 7 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The 2023 algal bloom is expected to have a low severity index of 3, according to the final forecast from the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration. This forecast uses an ensemble of different models, which consider phosphorus loading into Lake Erie during the spring and early summer.
