Wins piling up for Patriots, lead USCAA in Div. I scoring per game

Saturday was another day for the Southern State Patriots to add to their total wins for the season, this time winning for the 12th consecutive time, defeating Ohio University-Lancaster, 88-66 at OU-L.
The road win by SSCC was evident in the first half as they outscored their host, 48-25 after 20 minutes, and kept all but one point of that first half-lead as they were outscored 41-40 in the second half.
With the win, SSCC is now 16-2 overall (two wins via forfeit), as they have moved to the No. 1 spot in points per game scoring in Division I of the United State Collegiate Athletic Association at 96.5 in 15 games played.
SSCC is also No. 1 in blocks per game at 5.7, steals per game at 13.1 and assists per game at 21.6. SSCC is third in rebounds per game at 47.6.
In the Week 8 coaches poll, the Patriots are No. 12, and in the Week 8 power rankings, SSCC is fifth.
"We now have the best record in the country (USCAA Division I), and our team is very determined to reach the national tournament in March," SSCC head coach Travis McAvene said.[[In-content Ad]]
Four Patriot players scored in double figures, while three of those players earned double-doubles.
Brandon Whitlock led SSCC with 20 points and 13 rebounds. He was followed by Ty Harris with 17 points and nine assists, as he leads Division I of the USCAA in the category at 8.8 apg. Harris led SSCC with four steals.
Martise McLaurin and Kam Harris each scored 12 points with McLaurin adding 14 rebounds and Harris totaling 11 rebounds. McLaurin led SSCC with four blocked shots.
"We played a great first half on both ends of the floor," McAvene said. "Our players dictated the tempo of the game and played our style of basketball.
"Brandon Whitlock and Ty Harris played very well for us (Saturday), and both continue to show they're elite players at our level."
For the floor, SSCC shot 47 percent.
Also scoring for SSCC were Jalen Gordon (2), Dante Bryant (2), Diondrey Holt, Jr. (5), Jovon Freshwater (6), Isiah Walton (6) and J.R. Blair (3).
Overall for SSCC, they totaled 25 assists, seven blocked shots, 56 rebounds (14 offensive), 12 steals and 18 turnovers.
SSCC will play again on Wednesday, Jan. 23 as they travel to face Miami University-Middletown at 7:30 p.m.
