Wilmington tops Indians, 48-6

A rather sparse crowd turned out at Richards Memorial Field Friday, Sept. 7. On a night in which Hillsboro was the site of the Highland County Fair and Wilmington hosted the Clinton County Corn Festival, high school football fans were in limited supply, as the Wilmington Hurricane stormed past the Hillsboro Indians, 48-6.

Wilmington scored early and often in the first 12 minutes. By the end of the period, it was a 28-0 score.

The Hurricane added another 20 points in the second quarter, before Matthew Arnold scored the lone Hillsboro touchdown with 36 seconds left in the half.

Wilmington owned a 48-6 halftime advantage. Neither team scored in the second half.

After an intermission public address announcement of potential thunderstorms in the region, the third-period game clock continued ticking.

Wilmington running back David Henry started the scoring with a 56-yard rumble off right tackle on the 'Cane's first play from scrimmage. A low snap resulted in a miss conversion and Wilmington was up, 6-0.

Quarterback Cody McCune hooked up with Malik Rollins for a second TD. The two-point conversion made it a 14-0 game.

Rollins added a third TD on a two-yard plunge at the 5:31 mark. Jerry Johns then picked up a Hillsboro fumble and raced 25 yards for the fourth Wilmington touchdown in the opening period.

In the second period, Henry, Rollins and Henry again scored for the Hurricane, as they built a commanding 48-0 lead.

With 36 seconds left in the half, Arnold scored on a fourth-and-five play to put Coach Brian Spicer's Indians on the board.

Hillsboro running back Kordell Ford ran for 70 yards on the night, 15 of which came on a first-half option pitch from quarterback Logan Lesley.

Running back Craig Jackson had a solid effort, collecting more than 50 all-purpose yards, including picking up two Hillsboro first downs. Jacob Aber had three receptions for positive yardage.

Wilmington improved to 3-0 on the season.

Hillsboro (0-3) hosts Madison-Plains on Sept. 14.
