Tigers wrestle Whitehall-Yearling and Dresden Tri-Valley

ASHVILLE — The McClain wrestling team faced their toughest opponent so far this year on Saturday at Teays Valley High School, falling to Whitehall-Yearling and Dresden Tri-Valley in team matches.
They opened up their tri-match against Whitehall-Yearling, as the Whitehall-Yearling Rams won every match, except the 182-pound class, where freshman Gable Smith put the Tigers on the board with a pin.
McClain lost to Whitehall-Yearling, 72-6.
[[In-content Ad]]Brandon Davis (220) lost 3-2 after wrestling seven periods, and Roscoe East (170) lost 6-3 after wrestling six periods.
McClain was able to take a lead on their next opponent from Dresden Tri-Valley but were unable to keep the lead. McClain would fall short in the second match, 44-36, making their season record 11-8.
"Everyone experienced a loss (Saturday)," MHS head coach Shane Paul said. "That is exactly why I scheduled this event, because both of these schools have wrestlers ranked highly in the state, and some nationally.
"You must take some beatings to deliver some. (Saturday) we took some and gave some. Some of our guys only took some ... however, tough times don't last, tough guys do."
Individually, Jamaine Barnhart (113), Jake Badgley (138), Brandon Nebbergall (160), East (170), Smith (182), Davis (220) and Dylan Trefz (285) were all able to get their hand raised in victory in one of two matches.
Barnhart (10-7) and Nebbergall (10-14) were able to join the double-digit win club for the season. East was able to join Coty Barnhart (132) and Davis in the 25-win club for the season.
Up next for the Tigers is the state's first-ever state duals, which is essentially the playoffs for wrestling teams. This event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Washington Senior High School in Washington Court House at 6 p.m. McClain is the 7 seed, and they will face the No. 10 seed Clinton-Massie.
The Tigers will then return to action the following night, where they will face host Clinton-Massie for the second straight day, along with Madison-Plains. The second meeting is an official SCOL match (Thursday), which will be scored to determine league standings.
The Falcons are currently tied for third in the league with Hillsboro at 2-1, and McClain is currently tied with East Clinton for fifth with a 1-2 mark.
Following those consecutive days, the Tigers will return to action again on Saturday at the Miami Trace Invitational. The JV will wrestle at the Miami Trace JV Invitational.
