Tigers wrestle on consecutive nights

CLARKSVILLE — The McClain varsity wrestling team split two matches in a South Central Ohio League tri-match, Thursday, one day following wrestling in the state duals tournament.
McClain began Thursday night wrestling the Golden Eagles of Madison-Plains, as the Tigers won, 47-30. Following this match, MHS wrestled Clinton-Massie for the second consecutive night.
This match would be the rubber match, as MHS won the first match by nine points at the Blanchester Duals earlier this season, and CM won the second match by nine points in the first round of the state duals, Wednesday.
This match came down to the last weight class, as it did the previous night.
The Falcons won the deciding weight class in consecutive nights, thus securing the victory, this time by the slightest of margins, 37-36.
With this victory, the Falcons are now 4-1 in the league and in a three-way tie with Washington and Hillsboro for second place.
That tie will be broken next week, as all three of those teams will compete against each other in the last week of SCOL tri-matches. The tri-matches are the first leg in deciding final league standings.
The other leg is the league tournament.
McClain stands right behind those three teams with a 2-3 league mark. The Tigers' final league tri-match will be at Miami Trace next Thursday. The Panthers lead the league at 5-0, and East Clinton is one spot behind MHS at 1-4.
"Having a varsity wrestler quit the team this week spelled doom for us in consecutive nights against Massie," MHS head coach Shane Paul said. "With one match deciding both victories, that is the difference. I always say, tough times don't last, tough guys do."[[In-content Ad]]
Winning both matches for McClain on Thursday were Jamaine Barnhart (113), Brendon Goble (195), Brandon Davis (220) and Dylan Trefz (285).
Splitting matches at 1-1 were Kylee Stroud (106), Kaleb Smith (126), Ethan Paul (152), Brandon Nebbergall (160), Roscoe East (170) and Gable Smith (182).
Paul reached 15 wins on the season, improving to 15-19. Trefz reached the quarter century mark, as he is 25-10. The team leader, Davis, eclipsed 30 wins for the second consecutive year, as he is now 30-4.
The varsity and JV squads will travel to Miami Trace on Saturday, Jan. 26 to compete in the McDonald's Miami Trace Invitational. This is an 18-team tournament which is known for being very physical and demanding because of the high-quality teams involved.
MHS has an 18-9 record this year in tournaments.

This is basically the playoffs for wrestling teams.
McClain faced a familiar foe, the Clinton-Massie Falcons, a team the Tigers defeated earlier in the year at the Blanchester Duals. However, it was the Falcons that would come out on top this time, 39-30, thus eliminating Greenfield in the single-elimination tournament.
Coincidentally, the Tigers had won by nine points in their first matchup.
Winning their match for MHS were Jamaine Barnhart (113), Brandon Nebbergall (160), Gable Smith (182), Brendon Goble (195) and Brandon Davis (220). Goble now has double-digit victories for the season, as he is 10-7.
Hillsboro defeated Bellbrook, 56-31 in the quarterfinals of the state dual event.
