Tigers unable to overcome 1st quarter in loss to Blue Lions

WASHINGTON C.H. — If not for a 19-point first frame by the Washington Blue Lions, the McClain Tigers could have left Fayette County with a win … but the games are four quarters long, and the Tigers dropped their South Central Ohio League contest to Washington, 41-36, Friday night.
The first frame was tough on the Tigers (1-3, 4-5) as the Blue Lions scored 19 points in the opening eight minutes, as they sank five 3-pointers in the quarter and seven for the game. The Washington defense held the visiting Tigers to seven points in the same span.
From there, the Tigers would outscore the Blue Lions 29-22 in the final three quarters, as they got within a few points of tying the game in the final 1:07, but free throws were converted by the Blue Lions to seal the win.
In the second frame, MHS outscored WCH, 9-8, and in the third, it was an 11-6 score in favor of MHS. The Tigers won the fourth at 9-8.

Leading the Tigers in scoring was sophomore Ryan Faulconer with a game-high 13 points. He was followed by Brent Shannon (two 3-pointers) and Thomas Schrader with six points each and John Turner with five points, with one 3-pointer.
Scoring two points each were Wyatt Jones, Jeremiah Savage and Philip Thompson.
For the Blue Lions (3-1, 7-3), their leading scorer was Derek Shaw with 12 points (two 3-pointers). He was followed by Christian Johnson with eight points, as he also made two 3-pointers. Tyler Slone tallied five points, as did Trevor Bain.
Also scoring for WCH were David Harvey, Garret Phipps and Connor Eckles, all with three points each, while Josh Williams totaled two.
Harvey, Shaw, Johnson, Phipps and Bain each made at least one 3-pointer for the Blue Lions.
MHS was 7-of-11 from the free-throw line (64 percent), while WCH was 8-of-12 for 67 percent.
The Tigers play again Saturday, Jan. 5 as they host Zane Trace in a non-league game at McClain Gym.
