Tigers unable to gain momentum; fall to Blue Lions

WASHINGTON C.H. — Allowing three unearned runs and totaling just two hits was a mixture that didn't go in favor of the McClain Tigers Wednesday, as they fell to the Washington Blue Lions 3-0 at Washington Senior High School.
The Blue Lions scored their first run in the first inning and added their final two runs in the fourth, as all three runs were unearned due to four errors by the Tigers in those two innings. MHS finished with a total of seven errors in the South Central Ohio League game.
"Ryan (Case) had another great outing, but we gave him no run support," MHS head coach Brandon Streitenberger said. "We committed errors early on, and that spotted Washington runs, and we couldn't generate any offense."
In the first inning, Colton Sanders scored the first run for the host Blue Lions, as he reached the base on an infield error. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third in another infield error, eventually making the score 1-0.
That proved to be all the runs needed by Washington, but in the fourth, two more errors by the Tigers led to two Washington runs and a three-run lead. Scoring those runs were Michael Penwell and Tyler Spears.
For the game, WCH totaled seven hits.
McClain's two hits came in the top of the fourth with Ryan Perie singling and in the top of the fifth with a base hit by Caleb Rayburn.

The Tigers forced three walks by Brent Shannon, Zack Puckett and Cameron Spangler. Shannon also had two stolen bases.
Ryan Case was charged with the loss for MHS. Case pitched six innings, allowing three runs (none earned) on seven hits and no walks. He struck out six, including the side in the bottom of the second inning.
Penwell was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings for the Blue Lions. He allowed no runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out eight.
"Washington is the most improved team in the league since the start of the season," Streitenberger said. "They have won four in a row and have a lot of confidence. As for confidence, we are struggling in that department."
MHS falls to 7-14 overall and 4-6 in the SCOL. Washington improves to 8-8 overall and 3-7 in the SCOL.
