Tigers place 3rd at Bob Guy Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG — The McClain wrestling team saw their first action of the 2011-12 school year this past Saturday when they competed in the 11-team Bob Guy Invitational at Williamsburg High School.
McClain stayed near the top of the standings the entire day, leading after the first and fourth rounds of the six-round event, as the Tigers finished in third place, one spot away from bringing home a trophy.
Pacing the way for McClain was senior captain Joe Unger at 160 pounds. Unger went 5-0 on the day with five pins, as this was Unger's first tournament championship.
Matching Unger's accomplishment was junior captain Brandon Davis at 220 pounds. Davis went 5-0 with five pins, winning his first tournament championship.
Second-place finishers were as follows: Coty Barnhart, 132 pounds (2-1); Kaleb Osceola, 182 pounds (4-1); and senior captain, Gary Ryan 195 pounds (4-1).
McClain had two third-place finishes: Caleb Savage, 170 pounds (4-1); and Brendon Goble, 182 pounds (4-1).
Cody Black, wrestling at a higher weight class, placed fourth at 152 pounds, going 2-2 on the day. Bobby Coil went 2-3 on the day in the 220-pound class for fourth place.
Finishing fifth were Isaac Savage at 145 pounds (2-2) and Jake Branham (2-3), wrestling at a higher weight class at 285 pounds.
There were several wrestlers that got their first varsity victory: Kylee Stroud, 106 pounds (1-3); Ethan Paul, 138 pounds (1-3); and both Savage brothers (Goble and Coil.)
James Lain, 152 pounds, lost four very hard-fought battles.
Up next for McClain is a triangular match with Cincinnati Hughes Center and Hamilton Stephen T. Badin at Badin on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Joining the high school squad will be the Greenfield Middle School wrestlers as they will also compete against Hughes Center and another Cincinnati school to be announced.
