Tigers fall to Westfall at Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic

CHILLICOTHE — One night following a 19-point win to open the 2011-12 season, the McClain Tigers were unable to hold onto another fourth quarter lead, falling to Westfall 45-43 at the Zane Trace Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (1-1) had another slow start to begin a game, as they were held to six points in Saturday's first frame. On Friday (against Jackson) they didn't score a single point in the first eight minutes.
First quarter points against Westfall were scored by Thomas Schrader with five (including a 3-pointer) and Evan Mustard. Schrader finished with 18 points, including four 3-pointers.
The good aspect about this Tiger team is they don't let a little bit of first quarter adversity get to them … they forget about it and take charge.
MHS rallied in the second quarter with 10 points, while their defense held Westfall to two points. The Tigers trailed 17-16 at halftime.
In the second quarter, Schrader added eight more points to his overall totals, including two more 3-pointers. John Turner added the other two MHS second-quarter points.
MHS scored 16 points in the third, and their defense held Westfall to nine points to take a 32-26 advantage. The final eight minutes weren't so memorable for the Tigers as they were outscored 19-11.
In the fourth, MHS was 0-of-4 from the free-throw line.
The loss moves MHS to 1-1 overall. They next take the court on Friday, Dec. 9 when they travel to face cross-county rival Hillsboro in a South Central Ohio League contest. Hillsboro (0-2) lost on Saturday, also at the ZT Tip-Off Classic, by a score of 59-49 to Logan Elm.
