WASHINGTON C.H. — In what turned into a game that took two separate days to complete in two different weeks, the McClain Tigers trailed early, but managed to keep it a game as they fell to the Washington Blue Lions, 9-5 Monday.

The loss in the game, where MHS trailed 3-0 before the rainout a couple weeks ago, didn't restart any better for the visiting Tigers as they quickly trailed 7-0 at the conclusion of the second inning. Washington added two more runs in the third for a nine-run lead.

McClain (4-4, 7-9) fended off the run-rule as they battled to score three runs in the fifth and added two more runs in the top of the seventh.

"It is tough to play in suspended games, restarting down by three runs," MHS head coach Brandon Streitenberger said. "This game could have really gotten away from us, but it didn't."

In the Tigers' fifth inning, Kyle Flora, Trevor Gossett and Caleb Rayburn all crossed home plate. Flora opened the inning with a single, followed by Gossett drawing a walk, as did Rayburn.

Flora scored on a five-pitch bases-loaded walk by Trefz, followed by a sacrifice fly by Logan Rhonemus to score Gossett. Jordan Boles also hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Rayburn for the third run of the inning.

In the top of the seventh for MHS, Brent Shannon and Zach Rumor scored runs with RBIs by Cameron Spangler and Josh Carroll.

The Tigers finished with six hits as Shannon was 2-for-3 with one run and one walk, while Flora was 2-for-3 with one run. Boles and Carroll combined for the other two hits. MHS had five sacrifice plays and four walks.

For Washington, Shaw was 2-for-2, as the Blue Lions had four hits in the game. The other hits were off the bats of Slone and Jones. The Blue Lions forced 10 walks, with Leisure, Bain and Massie each drawing two.

The win went to Greer, with the loss charged to Boles. Shannon pitched in relief for the Tigers as he struck out five in 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks. Shaw pitched in relief for the Blue Lions.

"Brent pitched well for us, and he kept us in the game," Streitenberger said. "Shaw can pitch and hit, and he was a difference in the game."

The two teams will play again on Tuesday as the Tigers will host the Blue Lions at 5 p.m. at Mitchell Park in Greenfield.
