Tigers drop SCOL opener to Panthers

The third quarter ultimately proved to be the difference of the McClain Tigers having a win to open their South Central Ohio League season as they were outscored by 12 points in the frame, leading to a loss of 65-49 to the Miami Trace Panthers Friday at MTHS.
The Tigers (0-1, 1-2) led 8-7 following the first frame and kept the score close in the second as they were outscored 18-10 for a halftime deficit of 25-18.
Then came the third where MT (1-0, 3-0) tripled the output of the visitors at 18-6, and in the fourth, MHS came back with a 25-point frame but allowed MT to score 22.
MHS senior Brent Shannon led all scorers with 13 points as he was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, while knocking down one 3-pointer and three two-point baskets.
Thomas Schrader, a junior, followed with 10 points. Sophomore Ryan Faulconer totaled eight points, while senior John Turner had six.
Also scoring for MHS were Wyatt Jones, Jeremiah Savage and Evan Mustard, all with four points each.
MT was led by Brantlyn Decker with 12 points, followed by Austin Schoellkopf with a team-high 10 points. Jimmy Stroker made two 3-pointers (six points total) for MT, and Blake Baldwin made one, totaling seven points. Trevor Smith finished with eight.

Marcel Pettiford finished with seven for MT, while Cedric Pettiford totaled six. Jason Burst also added seven points, and Brady Ward scored two points.
MHS was 14-of-23 from the free-throw line (61 percent), while MT was 10-of-11 for 91 percent.
McClain was charged with 17 fouls (MT 24) and 15 turnovers (MT 17).
Both the MHS freshmen and JV teams won at MTHS.
The Tigers will play again on Friday, Dec. 14 as they host the Hillsboro Indians in SCOL play.
