The Troy Christian Holiday Wrestling Tournament is an annual event that features state championship teams and individuals, and during the weekend of Dec. 15, the McClain wrestling team finished eighth out of 10 teams in an event they used to gain time against top competition.

"We finished exactly where I predicted we would finish, in eighth place out of ten." McClain head coach Shane Paul said. "I wanted our guys, and gal, to see a higher level of competition, which we did.

"There was no give in these Tigers at this meet, and that's what I'm most proud of.  We were able to win some matches and put some guys on the podium."

The Tigers had two finalists as Brandon Davis at 220 pounds and Dylan Trefz at 285 pounds wrestled well at the event.

The duo was unable to defeat their state-ranked opponents in the finals, but they both had good matches, according to Coach Paul.

The top four in each weight class got medals, as the Tigers had two other wrestlers receive medals in Ethan Paul, who was unseeded at 160 pounds, who finished fourth and Roscoe East at 170 pounds, who also placed fourth.

Three others made it to the podium, scoring placement points for the team, in Coty Barnhart (132), Jake Badgley (138) and Gable Smith at 182 pounds.

Sid Wardlow at 126 and Isaac Savage at 152 didn't make the podium but were both able to score team points as they each scored one pin fall victory each. Kylee Stroud (106) and Cody Black (145) also wrestled at the event.

Winning the event was New Lebanon Dixie with 227 points.

"We can take this and learn from it," Paul said. "We'll work harder because of it, or we can just come in to practice and sit around on the mats and accept that where we are is good enough.

"We will see what these Tigers will decide to do when practice rolls around. It's up to the senior captains to take over and demand more of themselves and the team, to build toward making McClain a top-flight wrestling program."

The Tigers now stand at 2-0 in dual meets and 18-9 in tournaments for the season.  Individually, McClain now has five wrestlers in double-digit victories with Davis 12-2, Trefz 12-3, East 11-3, Barnhart 11-6 and Badgley 10-4.

Up next for MHS are the Blanchester Holiday Duals on Dec. 21-22 at Blanchester High School.
