The McClain varsity wrestling team opened their season on a high note, finishing second of 11 teams in the Bob Guy Invitational at Williamsburg High School Saturday to bring home the runner-up trophy.
Winning the tournament were the North College Hill Trojans, while the Tigers were paced by six finalists and four champions. Also from the South Central Ohio League, Washington finished fourth and East Clinton was 10th.
"I am very pleased with the effort these boys and girl put forth (Saturday)," MHS head coach Shane Paul said. "Win or lose, I'm proud of their effort.
"They all fought hard, and if you give everything you have, what else is there?"
Winning his second consecutive tournament title was senior captain Brandon Davis (220 pounds), going 5-0 on the day. Also going 5-0 was senior captain, 132 pounder Coty Barnhart and freshman Jake Badgley (145).
McClain's fourth champion was senior captain Roscoe East (170), winning all four of his matches.
McClain had two runners-up in Brendon Goble (195) and Dylan Trefz (285).[[In-content Ad]]
Finishing third was senior Isaac Savage (152).
Senior captain Cody Black finished fourth at 138 pounds, while Kylee Stroud (106), Brandon Nebbergall (170) and Gable Smith (182) all finished with sixth-place medals.
Sid Wardlow (126) captured one victory. Ethan Paul (160) and Jarrett Milnes (220) both wrestled four tough matches.
Up next for the MHS wrestling team is the first home match in several years on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. The junior high, JV and varsity teams will all be in action. The Greenfield Middle School will take on the Adena Warriors, while the varsity and JV teams will battle Adena and SCOL counterpart East Clinton.
The varsity team will follow their home match-up on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Xenia Invitational Tournament at Xenia High School.
