The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) announced the 2011 Softball National All-American and All-Academic teams during the annual championship banquet held May 5 in Akron.

Two second-year players on the Southern State Community College softball team were among those named to the 2011 USCAA National All-Academic Team: Brittany Colwell (graduate of Little Miami High School) and Ryann Morse (graduate of Eastern Brown High School).

Following the USCAA banquet, on May 13-14 the team headed to the 2011 Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC) National Championship, hosted by Clark State Community College, Springfield. Southern State went 2-2 and finished as a tournament runner-up, with Clark State claiming championship honors.

According to the OCAC website: “In another thrilling final game, Clark State was able to hold off Southern State Community College and win its second straight OCAC tournament championship. The Eagles lead most of the way behind the pitching of Emily Massie. Massie, who was coming off two stellar performances the day before, was on her game again until the middle innings. That is when the Patriots made their move and whittled the Clark State lead down and tied the game in the top of the 6th inning. In the bottom of the inning Taylor Western hit a double to center field, driving in the game winning runs and leading the Eagles to a 7-5 victory.”

Southern State award recipients included:

• First Team — Shelby Kelley, SSCC sophomore, graduate of Western Brown High School; and Brittany Colwell, SSCC sophomore, graduate of Little Miami High School.

• Second Team — Courtney Esz, SSCC freshman, graduate of Western Brown High School; and Breanne Johnson, SSCC sophomore, graduate of Miami Trace High School.
