SSCC enters break with 12-2 record following win over WSL

Anyone would be hard-pressed to find a team anywhere playing better basketball than the Southern State Patriots currently are, and they showed that again on Wednesday as they won their eighth consecutive game by defeating Wright State-Lake, 127-56.
The road win on Wednesday night puts the Patriots at 12-2 overall this season as they enter a winter break period.
In the win against WSL, the Patriots scored 57 points in the opening half, while allowing just 28 points. In the second half, SSCC outscored WSL, 70-28.
Four Patriot players finished with double-doubles, while six players scored at least 16 points.
In Week 5 of the Division I USCAA power rankings, the Patriots are No. 7 overall.
"We played great team basketball (Wednesday) against Wright State-Lake," SSCC head coach Travis McAvene said. "We had six players in double figures, which speaks volumes on how unselfish we are as a team.
"It is very clear now that we have a very good basketball team that can play on a national level. I'm looking forward to continued success with this team after the new year."
Earning double-doubles for SSCC were Ty Harris, Brandon Whitlock, Kamorin Harris and Isiah Walton.
Ty Harris totaled 17 points and 13 assists, while adding eight rebounds, five steals and one blocked shot. Kamorin Harris finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Whitlock tallied 23 points with 11 rebounds and four assists. Walton totaled a game-high 24 points, while adding 14 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

Whitlock, a freshman, was named the USCAA Men's Division I Player of the Week. During the week, he received the honor as he scored 53 points, while tallying 25 rebounds, 13 assists and five blocks.
Also finishing in double figures were Diondrey Holt, Jr. with 22 points, three assists, three steals and one block and Jalen Gordon with 19 points, six rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist.
J.R. Blair totaled six points, one block and three rebounds.
As a team, SSCC was 26-of-37 from the free-throw line (70 percent) and 44-of-81 from the field (54 percent) at WSL.
SSCC made 13 3-pointers with Whitlock totaling four and Kamorin Harris with three.
Defensively, the Patriots had four blocked shots, 24 assists, 58 rebounds (15 offensive) and 13 steals.
SSCC committed 11 turnovers.
The Patriots will resume action on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 as they will host Ohio University-Chillicothe at 7:30 p.m. at the Patriot Center located on the Hillsboro Campus of SSCC. They will follow that game with another home contest on Monday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. when they host UC-Clermont and Wednesday, Jan. 16 when they host Miami University-Hamilton.
