DODSONVILLE — This year, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs moved over the hump as they won their first sectional title in their current three-peat Southern Hills League championship streak by dominating the Northwest Mohawks 12-1 in five innings, Saturday at LCHS.
Even though LC trailed 1-0 after the top of the second inning was complete, the Division I champs of the SHL (15-10) rallied for four runs in the second, then changed the outlook of the game with eight runs in the third for what was the 11-run lead they wrapped up the game with.
[[In-content Ad]]LC not only scored 12 runs, but they finished with six hits and eight walks on the day.
Leading the Mustangs at the plate was sophomore Gage Waits, who was 2-for-4 (including a double) with one run and three RBIs. For the season, Waits is batting .395 with 23 runs scored and 10 RBIs. Waits is on a seven-game hitting streak, with 12 hits in that span.
Also gaining hits for LC were Ryan Inman, Joey Butler, Tyler Davidson and Josh Bauer.
Inman also tallied two runs and one RBI, while Butler scored two runs and collected one RBI. Butler is now batting .380 on the season with 25 runs scored and 26 RBIs.
Davidson totaled one RBI with one run, with teammate Bauer scoring two runs while gaining one RBI.
Also gaining RBIs for LC were Ryan Inman and Wes Pierson. Forcing walks were Inman, Scott Cawood (who scored two runs and forced two walks), Butler, Bauer and Chaz Lanier. For the year, Cawood is batting .338 on the year, while Lanier is batting .352 this season with 25 runs and 21 RBIs.
Scoring runs for LC were Inman (2), Pierson, Cawood (2), Butler (2), Davidson, Bauer (2), Lanier and Waits. Bauer also had a stolen base.
Earning the win was Terry Campbell, who pitched all five innings. Campbell (5-4), who has a 2.67 ERA on the year, allowed one run (one earned) on three hits and two walks. Campbell struck out seven batters. For the season, Campbell has 52 strikeouts.
The Division III SE District tournament for No. 3 seed LC will resume on Saturday, May 19 when they face No. 2 seed Alexander, who defeated Belpre, 2-0 Saturday in their sectional final.
