McClain senior Shania Massie has added one final accomplishment to her high school basketball career, signing her National Letter of Intent to play Division I collegiate basketball at Charleston Southern University.

Massie started all four years on the basketball court for the Lady Tigers, becoming the second all-time leading scorer in the history of the girls basketball program with 1,419 points.

This past season, Massie scored a career-high 451 points, while adding 144 rebounds, 91 steals and 61 assists, earning her Associated Press All-Ohio third-team honors for the second consecutive season (in total she was named All-Ohio three times).

It was a season where the Lady Tigers finished at 21-4 overall and were co-South Central Ohio League champions for the first time since 1991 with a 12-2 league record.

Besides her 1,400-plus career points, Massie tallied 500 career rebounds, 326 steals and 238 assists.

"This is very exciting to see happen to Shania," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "I've coached Shania for many years, and she definitely has the talent to play at the next level.

"She's worked very hard for this, and it is gratifying to see. Charleston Southern has been all in and they don't just want her there to sit, they want her to compete for playing time. This is a really good opportunity for her.

"I'm proud of her, and with any kid you coach, you want them to go to college with four years of free schooling. She's going to come out of college debt-free, so this is a very good situation for her."

The MHS senior spoke about what it was like to achieve her dream of being able to play collegiate basketball at the Division I level for Charleston Southern, who are members of the Big South Conference.

"I've reached my goal … I've always wanted to play Division I basketball," Massie said. "It is a pleasure to get this far, and I've put a lot of work to get here.

"I've been stressed to the max for two years, thinking about what I'm going to do or if any schools are going to come and watch. Coach Haines told me not to worry about it, and during the season I really didn't think about it, because I knew if I did I wouldn't play very well."

As a point guard for the Lady Tigers, Massie controlled the tempo her team played, and it showed as she is not only the second-highest scorer in the girls basketball program's history, but she holds the single-game scoring record as well, scoring 40 points against London (Jan. 30, 2013) her sophomore season at the McClain Gym.

In fact, that season Massie scored 350 points, and in her very first season with the Lady Tigers, she scored 203 points. Her junior season saw her score 415 points.

Other accomplishments for Massie include: Division III OHSBCA Player of the Year (2015), District 14 Division III Player of the Year ('14, '15). first-team All-District 14 ('13, '14, '15), first-team AP All-District ('14, '15), second-team AP All-District ('13), first-team All-SCOL ('13, '14, '15), second-team All-SCOL ('12), National Guard/JJ Huddle Player of the Week ('15), Ohio/Kentucky All-Star participant ('15) and Ohio North/South All-Star participant ('15).

With all the individual accomplishments, one of her favorite memories besides her two scoring accomplishments was a team goal achieved during the 2013-14 season.

"When we won the district championship last year, that was one of the best accomplishments I've been a part of," she said.

As for making Charleston Southern her final destination, Massie first had to thank those who helped make all of her goals and achievements a reality.

"I want to thank my parents, coaches, and the staff at Charleston for everything, because without them I wouldn't be where I am today," Massie said. "I love the coaches and community at Charleston, and I felt that's where I belong.

"They were nice there, and I know once I was there, that's where I fit in at and where I wanted to be."
