Second half surge leads to Lady Lion victory

LEESBURG – The Fairfield Lady Lions put the game out of reach Monday night with a 25 point fourth quarter, added along with a 21 point game from Fairfield senior Gabby Boone to give the Lady Lions a 54-31 non-league victory over Southeastern at Grandle Gymnasium.
Boone was the trendsetter against Southeastern as she finished with not only the 21 points, but a double-double as she grabbed 12 rebounds (three offensive) and had two blocked shots. Boone was 8 of 10 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.
“Gabby Boone played extremely well for us (Monday) with Chelsey (Riddle) in foul trouble in the first half,” Fairfield head coach Matt Hodson said.
The game began with the Lady Lions scoring eight points in the first quarter, but allowed just four points for the 8-4 advantage.
Southeastern outscored FHS in the second 9-8 as Fairfield was in foul trouble in the first half. The Lady Lions had two starters with two fouls and one with three in the opening 16 minutes.
In the second half FHS outscored Southeastern 38-18.
Junior post player Chelsey Riddle finished with17 points and seven rebounds. The junior was 1 of 2 from the line and 8 of 15 shooting. On defense Riddle had three blocks and three steals.
“Chelsey played well in the second half scoring 15 points,” Hodson said.
Fairfield senior Lauren Bowman sank one 3-pointer, and two two-point baskets, along with one free throw for a total of eight points. Bowman had nine assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal.
“Lauren helped us by breaking down Southeastern’s half and full court press,” Hodson said. “She has gotten better at slowing things down and being patient against pressure.”
Junior point guard Megan Sword finished with four points, two assists, two blocked shots, one steal and one rebound.
Sirenity Smith and Sadie Jones each scored two points. Jones had one steal, one rebound and one assist. Kortney Paris had one rebound and one assist. Courtney Huff gained one rebound.
The Lady Lions shot 23 of 45 from the field and were 1 of 8 from 3-point land. They were 7 of 12 from the free-throw line.
FHS gained 27 rebounds.
The Lady Lions will play again Thursday as they travel to face Eastern Brown.
