Running all the way to State: HHS, MHS runners headed to State Championships

ATHENS — It was a banner day for the track and field programs of the Hillsboro Indians and McClain Tigers as they added to the list of athletes who will be headed to the Division II State Track & Field Championships.
The performances of the runners in the two-day regionals at Athens High School, with the finals taking place on Saturday, was enough to punch the ticket of numerous runners to the state meet in Columbus this coming week.
[[In-content Ad]]A total of eight athletes combined from Highland County advanced to the state championships, with one from McClain in senior Luis Rivas and seven from HHS including: Jarrod Hart, Leah Pence, Megan Overberg, Hannah Kibler, Hannah Opst, Autumn Hacker and Brittany Ferrell.
For Rivas, this is his second trip to state as he made it last year, and this season he'll return to the 400-meter dash as he finished second in the regionals with a time of 49.83 for second place.
Hart was the regional champion of the 800m run, as the junior finished with a time of 1:55.62.
As for the girls regionals, Pence (a senior) was third in the 100m hurdles at 15.95.
Overberg was fourth in the regional 400m dash with a time of 1:00.03, as runners who finish in the Top 4 advance to the state championships.
Kibler was fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 26.24 and the 4x800m relay team of Opst, Hacker, Ferrell and Overberg were third at 4:07.58.
In other regional events, McClain senior Caleb Mootispaw was 13th in the 3200m run at 11:15.59.
In the girls 4x200m relay HHS was seventh at 1:49.11. McClain senior Taylor Faulconer was sixth in the 300m hurdles at 49.05. Opst was 11th in the 800m run at 2:28.61, and Pence was seventh in the pole vault at 9-03.00.
For the overall event, the HHS girls finished 11th with 26 points ad the HHS boys were 17th with 13 points. The MHS boys were 27th with eight points.
The boys team regional champion was St. Clairsville with 55 points and the girls regional champion was Millersburg West Holmes with 55 points.
The 2012 OHSAA State Track and Field Championships will take place on June 1-2 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.
